The songwriters for whom lyricist Robert Hunter has penned verse: Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, and Malcolm Welbourne. Malcolm who, you ask? Malcolm Welbourne, otherwise known as Papa Mali. Over a funkadelic spread of jambalaya, buttered cabbage, and Heineken 22-ouncers, Papa explained to me how got involved with the songwriting maestro, and his plans for turning those lyrics into tunes with the help of another Deadhead, drummer Bill Kreutzmann.
